In 2004 Gurpreet Kaur Bhatti’s play Behzti was cancelled after demonstrations turned violent because the play was considered a threat to public order. In Behud, the play which Bhatti subsequently wrote, she explicitly explores the tensions between public order and freedom of expression; and the dialogue between the theatre and the police in the lead up to the premiere of Behud in 2010 is a principle feature of Index on Censorship’s case study, Beyond Belief: Theatre, freedom of expression and public order – a case study, which I co-edited with Julia Farrington.
